Recovering of Nickel & Titanium Rotary From Disposed Rotary Endodontic Files

Abstract

Nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary endodontic files are vital in modern dentistry due to their superelasticity. However, their disposal presents environmental and economic challenges as NiTi is non-biodegradable and contains valuable metals. This study investigates a sustainable hydrometallurgical method using sulfuric acid leaching to recover nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti) from discarded files. Results demonstrate peak recovery efficiencies of 87.5% for Ni and 78.3% for Ti, yielding high-purity crystalline oxides (NiO and TiO₂) suitable for industrial reuse.
