Establishing a Regional Agribusiness Hub in Northern Mindanao: A Framework for Technology Commercialization and Capacity Building

Despite the valuable agricultural research produced by State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the Philippines, persistent underutilization limits its potential to drive regional economic growth. Promising innovations frequently fail to transition from the laboratory to the market. To bridge this gap, this project establishes a sustainable Regional Agribusiness Hub (ABH) in Northern Mindanao, creating a structured pathway to commercialize academic research and accelerate market adoption. The primary objective was to create a functional innovation ecosystem that bridges the gap between research and market application. The methodology employed a multi-faceted framework encompassing intensive capacity building, delivery of comprehensive pre-commercialization services, and the cultivation of strategic partnerships. Key initiatives included an Agribusiness Mentorship Series and specialized agripreneurship training to enhance the skills of staff from Consortium Member Institutions (CMIs). The project successfully trained CMI personnel and significantly overachieved its targets for producing critical commercialization documents, including business plans, feasibility studies, technology valuation report and commercialization plan for technologies with promising commercialization potential. Furthermore, strategic partnerships were forged with key regional players such as Local Chambers, Government institutions supporting MSME growth. The project's long-term sustainability is anchored in the formal institutionalization of the hub through the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) Policy. This initiative not only created a vibrant innovation ecosystem in the region but also provides a robust, replicable model for technology transfer and commercialization in the Philippine agri-aqua sector.
