Preventive and restorative dentistry has radically changed its conventional, invasive, treatment modalities into minimal invasive, patient-centered and technologically enhanced modalities. The current study is concerned with the recent developments in preventive measures, restorative materials, techniques, and digital technologies and their role in enhancing oral health. The current preventive dentistry is risk-based and tailored, with the application of new fluoride technology, bioactive compounds, manipulation of microbiomes, and early detection of disease as the means to improve disease prevention and management. Restorative dentistry has also been enhanced by the development of new materials, including composite resin, bioactive and biomimetic materials, glass ionomer cements and smart materials with antibacterial and remineralizing properties. Other new technologies that have enhanced accuracy of the treatment, speed and patient comfort are minimally invasive dentistry, atraumatic restorative treatment, laser technologies, computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and 3D printing. Diagnostic, treatment planning and individual care using data analytics, digital smile design and teledentistry have been revolutionised using digital dentistry and artificial intelligence. Moreover, patient satisfaction and compliance has been optimised through patient-centred strategies that put into consideration behavioural, psychological, and social considerations. However, the barriers still exist in the form of cost, accessibility, material durability and ethics. The future is regenerative dentistry, nanotechnology and precision dentistry. In conclusion, the use of new materials, technologies, and patient-centered solutions is a disruptive approach of the modern dentistry that provides better clinical outcomes and long-term oral health solutions.
